Guglielmo Zocchi Paintings
Italian artist, Guglielmo Zocchi, is believed to have been born in 1874. There is little to no available information on his life or training, but he had created several beautiful Greco-Roman paintings and scenes of British/French women in domestic situations in his lifetime. The paintings, some of which have been sold recently in major auction houses, often did so between USD$18,000 to $32,000 and more. His themes are very similar to those of Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Frederic Leighton, and John William Godward, who were famous Pre-Raphaelite and Neo-Classical painters, but he differed in that the women he painted in his scenes were very rarely, if ever, nudes.
The type of neo-classical paintings that Zocchi made went out of fashion in Europe shortly after the turn of the 20th century, but the scenes of 19th century European women were still in vogue up until the beginning of World War I. Some of the paintings that he produced are: A Mother’s Darling; A Serenade; An Afternoon’s Entertainment; The Cockfight; What Happens Next; An Offering; and The Recital. Zocchi was a prolific artist with several paintings to his credit. It seems that the change in art movements, basically a leaning towards Impressionism, that occurred in the 1880s did not affect his style, but the abstract art movement may have ended his art career early, if he was still alive at the time.
